—>Changes to GemStart 3.0 disk
This release of GemStart 3.0 contains two very important additions not on previous releases of this bootable disk:
• The inclusion of Apple's “Disk First Aid” application—this powerful repair utility should be used to test the condition of the hard drive that you plan to install GemStart 3.0 on.
• “SCSI Probe” is available in the “Control Panel” to assist the user and TOTAL SYSTEMS tech support in tracking down hard drive problems.
—>Guidelines for GemStart Usage
Due to changes in system software available from Apple, we have established the following guidelines. To determine which version of GemStart you should use, please refer to the list below:
• If you are using system 6.0.7 or 6.0.8, then install “GemStart 2.2” & “AppleTalk” file to your startup disk’s System Folder. (These files are in the System Folder on the GemStart™ 3.0 floppy)
• If you are using system 7.x, then install GemStart 3.0
—>Installing and Using GemStart 3.0
To install GemStart 3.0 follow the steps below. Since GemStart 3.0 is only recommended for use with System 7, the steps below apply only to Macs running under that system software. The instructions for usage of GemStart vary depending on what type of board it is being used with. The instructions for your particular configuration can be found in the “Installing GemStart” chapter of the manual that came with your accelerator board.
GemStart 3.0 Installation Instructions:
• Lock the GemStart 3.0 disk by sliding the write-protection tab so that the hole underneath the tab is visible.
• Make a back-up copy of your GemStart 3.0 floppy and work from the copy.
• Start up your machine with the GemStart 3.0 disk.
• Locate the GemStart 3.0 icon on the GemStart 3.0 disk and copy it in to the Extensions folder in your System Folder. You must deliberately move the file to the Extensions folder—dropping the icon onto the System Folder will copy the file to the Control Panels folder. Make an alias of the GemStart™ 3.0 file and move it to the Control Panels folder.
• Restart your Macintosh
• Follow the instructions in your manual for configuration options and settings.
—>New Features of GemStart 3.0
The new feature of GemStart 3.0 are:
• System 7.0.1 & 7.1 Compatibility — GemStart 3.0 is compatible with Apple’s System 7. With the dramatic changes in the system software, many programs had to be updated for compatibility reasons, and GemStart was no exception. GemStart 3.0 has been designed to be compatible with all versions of System 7 currently available. This includes versions 7.0, 7.0.1 and 7.1 (Be sure to use the System 7 Tune-Up v1.1.1 with 7.0 & 7.0.1!). Unfortunately, changes to the system software in the future may once again necessitate modifications to GemStart. Total Systems is dedicated to maintaining a forward looking posture and will make every effort to be compatible with the latest system releases.
• Fool Applications Button — You may add applications that seem to have problems with your accelerator (these are primarily games) to this list. This tells GemStart 3.0 to fool these applications by not allowing them to find out about the machine they are running on. In many instances this will allow the application to run smoothly. However, the success is dependent on the way the application in question was originally designed.
• Accelerator Info Button—This feature displays a dialog box with a description of the current configuration of the accelerator board. This includes the total amount of RAM memory and the sizes of the memory modules installed on the board (ie 1M SIMM).
—>Other Changes to GemStart 3.0
There were some problems that occurred in certain situations with GemStart 2.2 which have been corrected or adjusted in version 3.0.
• Floppy Disk Formatting Crashes - In certain situations, users were not able to successfully format floppy disks with GemStart running. This problem has been corrected with version 3.0.
• Sound Problems and Crashes - Many revisions were made to the system software in regard to the use of sound on the Macintosh with System 7. The difficulties in manipulating sounds caused some applications (once again, for the most part, games) to develop problems with GemStart 2.2. Version 3.0 corrects for many of the different problems that may occur in sound usage under old systems (prior to System 7) and makes updates for compatibility with System 7.
• Copy ROM to RAM Option - This function is now completely under GemStart control. The switch to activate and deactivate has been removed.
